March 17, 2007 — On the market for only two years, Fulcrum has quickly become one of the main players in the road wheel sector – two years and two road world titles with Tom Boonen in 2005 and with Paolo Bettini in 2006. Now the Italian company has decided to enter the MTB world and will sponsor the Orbea Racing Team and reigning MTB XC World Champion, Julien Absalon.
“We decided to enter the MTB world because we are certain that the innovation, technology and quality of Fulcrum wheels will attract many riders in the off-road sector as is the case with the road range,” said Fulcrum General Manager, Paolo Simionato. “Our aim is to become market leaders for high-end bicycle wheels and the MTB market is indispensable for this purpose.”
The Orbea Racing Team will use the top model in the Fulcrum off-road range, the Red Metal Zero Disc, for the 2007 season. It will be officially presented along with the entire off-road range at the Taipei International Cycle Show (March 24-27). The official racing debut will be at Banyoles for the Copa Catalana.
