March 21, 2006 – Villa Charities is proud to present local artist Francesco Galle’s whimsical, bicycle inspired paintings in the new exhibition Francesco Galle: Happy Bike People in Giro, in Columbus Centre from April 6 until May 31 2006.

The Toronto-based painter has attracted an increasing amount of local and international critical attention, having previously exhibited works at various galleries in Toronto, Sicily and Germany. Known for his quirky and colourful illustrations, in a style reminiscent of Chagall, Galle uses watercolour and ink to illustrate characters in various ethereal poses. The paintings in Galle’s upcoming exhibit feature bicycles, painted in various colours and forms, and show the artist’s appreciation for life’s simpler pleasures, such as getting a coffee or even a ride through the countryside.

“I paint bicycles because I love to ride and the shape of the bicycle has always intrigued me” says Galle, “big round shapes and perfectly straight lines, those two opposing shapes are what make perfect motion – it’s kind of a metaphor for the way I like living.”

Villa Charities has joined the artist to help promote the organizations’ new fundraising ride Giro T.O, an Italian themed cycling tour of Toronto inspired by the famous Giro d’Italia. The event will promote urban cycling as part of an active and healthy lifestyle while raising money for Villa Charities.

“We are thrilled to work with Mr. Galle,” says Edward Sorbara, Villa Charities Foundation board member and generous sponsor of the Giro T.O. “Villa Charities is a strong supporter of the arts, and this exhibit in particular will be a great pre-launch for our upcoming event, Giro T.O.”

Villa Charities will host an opening reception on Thursday April 6, 2006 at Columbus Centre from 7-9 pm. In recognition of this special partnership, Galle will also present Villa Charities with a commemorative work inspired by the upcoming Giro T.O.
