May 10, 2004 – Stage 5: Individual TT: Dunkerque. There is something about day five of the Four Days of Dunkirk that just doesn't sound right. To add to the confused semantics, the tour's final day contained two stages. The morning's 12km TT was a flat, fast, but very technical course with 22 turns and several chicanes along the ocean front shore walk. World TT champion David Millar was one of the favorites, and due to losing significant time yesterday with an ill-timed mechanical, was one of the first riders to hit the course. His time of 15'23″ was the standard the others would have to better.

Millar's time stood strong, with only former world Champ Bradley Wiggins coming close at 15'24. Navigators U.S. National TT champ Chris Baldwin left the start house at the midpoint of the line-up. Baldwin powered a big gear in his classic aerodynamic position, cruising smoothly through the turns, and accelerating quickly after each deviation. Clearly in good rhythm, his time would be fast, and as he pushed through the finish line, the clock showed 15'21″, two seconds faster than Millar, and on top of the leader board. Baldwin's time was still holding strong when teammate Viktor Rapinski rolled across with a 15'32″, putting him sixth with 20 riders to go. Relax-Bodysol's Sebastian Rosseler was the first to move past Baldwin with a 15'11″, and his teammate, Bert Roesems, moved into second place a few minutes later with 15'15″.

The remaining riders were all fighting for top GC positions, and sure to take the necessary risks on the technical course. Former World Champion Laurent Brochard's 15'06″ was not such a surprise, but sprinting ace Danilo Hondo turned some heads when he outclassed the entire field with an impressive 14'53″. Baldwin finished in seventh for the Navigators, with Rapinski in 18th.

Stage 6
Dunkerque- Dunkerque:

The grand finale of this year's Dunkirk tour was an exciting circuit event
in the city's downtown region. A 24km loop fed into seven laps of 10km, and
a pancake flat course set to entertain the spectators, and feature the
sprinters. 103 riders were left to start, and although five were allowed to
gain a 1'30″ gap, race leader Chavanel's Boulangere team controlled the
tempo until the sprinters teams took over with three laps remaining.
Hondo's Gerolsteiner team did the work to bring the break back, and then
with one lap remaining, US Postal showed their confidence in Van Heeswijk
by taking control, and setting a fast pace. Several teams exchanged the
lead, including Cofidis (O'Grady), FDJ (Cooke), and AG2R (Nazon), but
Postal kept coming to the fore. In the mad, and crazy, dash for the line,
Van Heeswijk paid his team the ultimate reward finishing in front of Nazon
and Hondo. Navigators' Ciaran Power finished the day in 10th. Chavanal
held onto the leader's jersey for his second win in Dunkirk.
