November 24, 2006 – KANEN, John Dominic - Peacefully on Monday, November 20, 2006 in his 79th year at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Beloved father and father-in-law of Spencer and Andrea. Cherished grandfather of Christie and Samantha. Dear friend to Arnold, Darlene, Eddy, Cecelia and many others. The family will receive friends at the MARSHALL FUNERAL HOME, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill (4th traffic light north of Major Mackenzie Dr.) on Saturday, November 25, at 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Service to follow in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, a donation to The Kidney Foundation of Canada in John’s memory would be greatly appreciated.
John was actively involved in the OCA’s Recreational Bicycling program in the late 70s. John’s book-keeping gave the OCA credibility at a time when the organisation’s future hung on whether or not the next appication for funding would be approved by the Ontario Government sports consultant.
John’s passing evokes memories of weekends spent with John, Tom Parry, Norm Hawirko, Tony Smith, Dick Querney Herb Bates, Gary Kirkey and others, planning the Ontario Cycling Association’s 1975 ‘PREO’ tour of Ontario and subsequently, of two glorious weeks pedalling from Toronto to Ottawa and back.
Ontario bicycling owes John a debt of gratitude for for the many hours he spent looking after the Association’s financial affairs during those tumultuous years. My sincere condolences go out to his son Spence and Andrea, his daughter-in-law.
