April 02, 2013 (London, ON) – 16 year old junior cyclist Sarah Mason (InVita-FCV) from London, capped off a tremendous start to the 2013 season on Saturday night with her second win in as many days.
On Saturday night at the Forest City Velodrome was very busy with 65 cyclists entered for the evening of racing action. The featured race was the Mary Kelly Memorial 100. Complete race results can be found (here). The 100 lap main event was a very competitive affair with all 10 women who entered the race taking their turn on the front of the pack. Members of the InVita-FCV team continued to attack the other women. During the early laps Sara Byers (InVita-FCV) took the first preem at lap 5 (presented by Occto-Cervelo) and Byers had the strength early in the race to lap the field and scored the $100.00 (Lap the field) preem (thanks to our USA friends). Byers was always near the front to counter any escape attempts.
Near the half way point, a group of 3 escaped from the field, Stephanie Bester (CoachChris.ca), Candice Vermeulen and eventual winner Mason were able to lap the main pack. The field were struggling to match the pace of the lead group.
With 18 laps to go Mason made the decisive move of the race, while the pack was watching the Elite women from the InVita-FCV team, it was the Junior who saw an opportunity and quickly gained 1/4 of a lap. Still no chase from the group, the gap went to 1/2 a lap and that is when the pack sensed the danger of the move. However, it was a little too late as with the laps winding down, Mason continued to ride at a TT pace and was able to win the Mary Kelly Memorial 100 by a full straight away. Candice Vermeulen and Stephanie Bester were 2nd & 3rd.
After the race, most of the spectators came down to the infield to congratulate all the women for a great race and to remember Mary Kelly who was one of most active volunteers at the FCV.
Mason’s first win came in the 61st annual Good Friday Road Race in Ancaster Ontario. The race came down to a sprint finish and teamates Mason & Claudia Newdick (InVita-FCV) sprinted for the finish line. The end result on Friday was a 1 – 2 finish for the Invita girls.
