October 23, 2006 (London, ON) – Team London stole the show on Sunday, Oct. 22. Maogosha Pyjor, the only female in the 6-team lineup, powered her way to the overall victory with partner Garnett Abbey. They fought off attack after attack by other teams trying to gain a lap and managed to stay on even laps with teams Hamilton and Brantford.
That brought it down to sprint points to decide the winner of the night and they were more than up to the challenge. Although down in points the first 30-minute session they bounced back to win the miss and out event and then captured first place points in all point sprints in sessions two and three.
This is the first 6-day contested by a female and Maogosha has the admiration of the entire arena with her gutsy competitiveness.
Spectators really got into the excitement and provided half a dozen big prime sprints to add to the action. Team Vancouver’s Keith Thorarison and Dave Byer were the top prime winners.
In the overall standings after three days of the 6-day Team Brantford of Eric Robertson and Piers Davidge are leading and there is a three-way tie for second place. Other teams are within two points of second place.
The race was preceded by a tribute to Joe DeMaeyer that included an honour guard of all riders along the finishing straightaway as Joe’s son Leon rode Joe’s bike around the velodrome apron for ‘the last lap’.
