December 26, 2006 — Americans Floyd Landis (cycling) and Justin Gatlin (running) were the year’s biggest doping scandals according to a recent report by Associated Press. In July 2006 both Gatlin, who equaled the world record in the 100 meters, and Landis, who won the Tour de France, both tested positive for testosterone.
Gatlin is appealing an 8-year suspension and is working with the doping authorities while Landis is hoping to prove that the French Chatenay-Malabry lab that tested his samples made a mistake. If Landis is found guilty of doping at U.S. arbitration hearings, he would be formally stripped of the Tour title and face a two-year ban. A ruling is expected early in 2007.
