May 15, 2007 (Malibu, CA) – Today is day two of the Floyd Landis hearing before the American Arbitration Agency that will judge whether Landis was guilty of doping with synthetic testosterone when he won the 2006 Tour de France. The case pits Landis and his lawyers against the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Some 40 names of possible witnesses are posted on the US Olympic Committee Press Box website at www.usocpressbox.org.
Apart from leading authorities on biomedical questions and/or laboratory employees, two former TdF winners are on the list – Belgian Eddy Merckx (winner of five TdFs, five Giros and one Vuelta a España) and American Greg LeMond (a three-time winner of the TdF).
Merckx is listed as a defence witness while LeMond is listed as a USADA witness. Also listed as a USADA witness is Irish-American Joseph Papp (Team Bianchi-Cinghiale), a columnist for Cyclingnews.com. It is not clear how many of the possible witnesses will actually testify. Among those who will be giving testimony, some may do so by telephone rather than an in-court appearance.
Yesterday heard testimony from Dr. Cedric Shackleton (Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute), one of the world’s leading experts in the field of steroid metabolism, and J. Thomas. Brenna, Ph.D. (Professor of Nutritional Science, Cornell), one of the world’s leading experts on isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) analysis.
