December 20, 2007 – Wanted: Athletic women, 16-26 years of age, to participate in National Team development program.
This summer, London’s Forest City Velodrome is going to send the largest, strongest elite women’s track cycling team in the history of the province of Ontario to the Canadian national track cycling championships. After three, well-attended development camps in October, November, and December, our team has been formed and is growing stronger every day. But we still have time to train a limited number of new recruits.
Our 4th elite women’s development camp will be offered to riders in two tiers:
Tier 1 (Friday, January 11, 5-7pm; Saturday, January 12, 9-11am): Basic bike handling skills at average speeds up to 35K. Standing start and interval training.
Tier 2 (Friday, January 11, 7-9pm; Saturday, January 12, 5-8pm): For continuing team members only. Drills at average speeds in excess of 35K. Madison, match sprint, Keirin, and miss-and-out training and tactics.
Women interested in participating in the Tier 1 camp are asked to pre-register by contacting Dina Ridha at info@forestcityvelodrome.ca. Registration closes at 1pm on Thursday, January 10.
The FCV elite women’s development program has been created to help those new to the sport manage some of the expenses involved in taking up track cycling. Initial benefits include free instruction, track time, and track bike rentals as well as the cost of basic equipment (helmet, gloves, cycling shoes and pedals, and 2 pairs of cycling shorts). Subsequent benefits include deep discounts on track bikes, parts, and clothing (with the support of The Bicycle Shop in Brantford, ON), ongoing training and support, and assistance attending the Canadian National Track Championships and other competitive events.
Women interested in participating in the program are welcome to come to the tier 1 camp and participate in regular FCV recreational and training sessions for up to 3-weeks prior to making a commitment. Those wanting to continue will be asked to purchase an FCV student membership ($250/year) and participate in either 2 FCV training sessions per week or one training session and one race night, on an ongoing basis (work & studies permitting).
All camp costs are supported by the FCV and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
