Fat Tire 2009 at COP – Report, Photos

by Chris Redden

March 28, 2009 (Calgary, AB) – On Sunday, March 22, a dedicated group of mountain bike racers came out to Canada Olympic Park in Calgary to compete in the Fat Tire 2009. Close to 100 riders braved the elements to challenge each other in a series of qualifying heats. The event is a 4-cross style race that takes place on the ski hill and follows the Westside Terrain Park.

Following a series of heats a select few eventually worked their way up to the finals. Conditions this year proved to be challenging to say the least. Six to eight inches of fresh snow the day before made for an extremely soft course that saw riders crashing and even running to get down the hill. With cold winds roaring in from the west, organizers chose to condense the course and make a group of eight for the final two qualification rounds and finals.
