22-year-old RONA rider Erinne Willock had a standout season in 2003, culminating in a ride at the Hamilton 2003 Road Worlds supporting the Canadian team. This 2004 season sees her riding again with the strong RONA squad, where her climbing and all-around skills will be put to use in both North American and perhaps European races. Pedal had a chance to catch up with the Victoria, B.C. native.
Pedal: Erinne, what kind of racer do you think you are? What are your strengths and what are your weaknesses?
Willock: Definitely I'd say hillclimbing. I'd like to be known as an all-round cyclist so I'm working on my sprint. Sprinting is one of my weaknesses! (Laughs). As far as strengths, I'd have to say aggressiveness and a positive attitude. I'm not really scared of anything, so I am always willing to work as hard as I can for the team.
Pedal: You were born and raised in Victoria, going to the University of Victoria, and a regular spotting on the roads around here. What do you like about Victoria, and why?
Willock: Because Victoria's the best! (Laughs) I mean, what else can I say? It's just the best! It's my home of course, but also it's a great place for riding. The roads are great, and there are lots of great hills. It's always (more or less) warm here, and there are a lot of great riders here now. And of course, all my family and friends are here.
Pedal: What's your favourite Victoria ride?
Willock: I'd say Munn's road or the Highlands. The are some really great routes, really nice roads and great scenery.
Pedal: So what would you be if you weren't a full-time cyclist? What does Erinne Willock do in her spare time?Willock: Well if I wasn't racing I'd be a graduate! (Note: Willock is mid-way through her degree at UVIC, due to her cycling career). I really enjoy hiking as well, and just recently I tried snowshoeing, which was a blast. I run a little in the off-season as well. School keeps me pretty busy when I'm not training.
Pedal: Seen any good movies lately?
Willock: Yes, Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp was great.
Pedal: Good luck in this upcoming season!
Willock: Thanks!
