May 17, 2004 – This year, Levack, Ontario's Eric Wohlberg has been doing what he does best: riding consistently, finishing well in just about every race he rides this year. After a stage win at the Tour of Langkawi, Wohlberg had a good spring on the west coast, followed by a strong top-ten ride at the Tour of Georgia. Pedal caught up with the 38-year-old Canadian stalwart.

Pedal: You had a great ride at Georgia. Tell us about that, the race itself and your ride.

Wohlberg: I was a little shagged for the first few days as we did Sea Otter and had a couple of hard days, then straight onto a red eye from San Fran to Atlanta. The first couple stages of Georgia were pretty fast. It was apparent that many teams were riding for field sprints, so breakaway attempts were useless. We made a couple of attempts on the finishing circuits and were able to break the field up somewhat and had a couple top 10s. With Olympic selection in mind, I was really hoping to try to get a top 10 GC finish. Perhaps not a lofty goal to all the critics out there, but most would admit that the field was pretty deep, and if the stages weren't long, they were difficult/back to back or all of the above. Mid race, I was starting to come down with something and I was absolutely busting my ass to try to hold my GC. But Tour Of Georgia was a great race, and I managed to survive. I think that all of us hosers had a good ride down there. I would have liked to have finished a couple rungs higher, but that was all I could do.

Pedal: How is the form, and how is your new team for 2004, Sierra Nevada? What have you been racing since Georgia?

Wohlberg: Right after Georgia, I stayed on to do a bunch of crits in South Carolina. I ate a serving of ashphalt in the first race and was pretty scuffed up. I'm starting to bounce back, but it always takes a wee while to make up for the lost training and healing process. As for the Sierra Nevada team, the boys and staff gave their all this spring. I think Sea Otter and a tight travel schedule took out more than what we anticipated. In general, the team is coming along and we are showing that Sierra Nevada is no longer a development squad .

Pedal: How are things looking for Athens?

Wohlberg: As for the Olympics, I'm hoping that I make the team. I have tried my best to make UCI points whenever possible this spring to help secure our top 30 standing and secure three spots for Athens. My 2004 results have been pretty solid across the board. I believe that I can make a significant contribution to our team.
