April 28, 2007 (Staunton, VA) — Friday’s Stage 5 at the Tour of Virginia saw an impressive performance by Eric Boily (EVA/Devinci) as he finished 5th in the 160km race between Waynesboro and Staunton. Boily was the top Canadian in the stage and still had reserve power after lots of attacking on the previous day’s stage.

Friday’s race was lively from start to finish, with many breaks and chases over mountainous terrain. But the peloton had swallowed all of the breaks at about one kilometre from the finish.

In the final uphill 400 metre sprint Boily moved up from 15th to cross the finish line in fifth place at 4:11:35. Unofficial results give winner Jonathan Cantwell (Kahala-La Grange) a time of 4:11:34.

Boily’s only remaining team mate, Joel Dion-Poitras, also had an good race, finishing 45th at 4:11:43. Meanwhile, Erik Lyman Calyon/Litespeed was the next Canadian in 26th at 4:11:39.

Overall 102 cyclists were classified on Thursday Рsince the start of the tour, some 80 cyclists have abandoned the race or were hors- d̩lai.

Today sees a 55km criterium taking place in the town of Harrisonburg. The final stage is Sunday with a 160km road race between Charlottesville and Albernarie.
