September 8, 2006 – The Bermuda Bicycle Association and the organizers of the CD&P Bermuda Grand Prix announce that this evening’s XL Lighthouse Challenge in Southampton, will be the final stage of the 2006 event. Due to the serious threat of Hurricane Florence and the potential for damage to Bermuda’s infrastructure, it is recommended that all overseas participants attempt to secure amended travel plans to depart Bermuda before Sunday morning. The organizers will understand if participants make alternative travel plans for today and are therefore not able to race this evening.
BBA president Francois Bertrand said, “Though we are reluctant to have to cancel this event with only half of the racing completed, it is with the safety of our overseas guests in mind that we have taken this decision. No one should take this storm with anything less than the most concern and where possible non-residents should attempt to depart Bermuda in advance of the severe weather.”
Ross Webber of title sponsor Conyers Dill & Pearman echoed Mr. Bertrand’s statement and added that though it was disappointing that weather has again interrupted the event, the personal safety of all those involved was paramount.
