June 05, 2014 (Baie St-Paul, QC) – An 87-year-old driver could lose her licence after driving into about 70 cyclists in a hit-and-run incident reports the Montreal radio station, 98.5FM. The incident happened Sunday (June 1) at the Grand prix cycliste de Charlevoix, but fortunately none of the cyclists suffered serious injuries. Some cyclists, however, were unable to continue the race.
The Quebec provincial police (SQ) met with the driver and informed her she could face a $600 fine and lose nine demerit points. She will also be forced to undergo another driver’s test in order to re-establish her competency to drive.
This latest incident involving security at Quebec races seems completely unrelated to a crash at the GP St Raymond on May 25. An outcry of protests following that crash includes calls for the resignation of Louis Barbeau, director general of the Quebec cycling federation (FQSC) – read more here.
The GP de Charlevoix road race was won by Jean Sebastien Perron (Stevens-The Cyclery) among the senior men and by Catherine Fleury (Independent) among the senior women – complete results here.
