Dorel to Open Concept Bike Store Near New York City

by John Symon
May 28, 2013 (East Garden City, NY) – Canadian-based Dorel Industries Inc. will soon open a concept store near New York City states Martin Schwartz, company president and CEO, according to The Globe and Mail. The 378-square-metre store (4,100 sq feet) near Roosevelt Field on Long Island, one of largest malls in the U.S.A., should be open in June 2013.

Dorel owns such bike brands as Cannondale, GT, Mongoose, and Schwinn. Apart from bikes, the store will sell clothing, parts and accessories. The company owns the Sugoi, Cannondale, GT, Schwinn, IronHorse and Mongoose apparel lines. Guru custom bike fitting will also be available to consumers at the new store. Dorel also has its Pacific Cycle division, which works with the mass merchant and sporting goods channel, selling to large box stores, but this division will not be involved with the East Garden City store.

Schwarz stressed that the new store will be a “retail innovation lab” to provide closer contact with customers and determine better strategies for independent bike dealers (IBDs) selling its brands. His brother, chief financial officer Jeffrey Schwartz, added that while Dorel envisions opening “three or four” other concept stores in markets where there are no successful IBDs selling its brands, there are no plans to take such concept stores nationwide.
