Dodge Tour de Georgia — Stage 3

April 22, 2005 (Rome, GA) – Rain arrived just as the first rider in Stage 3 of the Tour de Georgia went out of the chute for the 29.9 km time trial. The rain continued throughout the Stage, and hampered efforts by riders to gain some time in the G.C. standing. “The course was interesting,” said 2004 Canadian Time Trial champion Svein Tuft (Symmetrics), “It was more diverse than most TT courses and included a hill, which makes it hard to maintain a rhythm.” A rhythm which is crucial to a strong performance in a time trial. It seems that many riders were off their rhythm today, including Lance Armstrong who placed a distant 9th.

The “hill” or Mount Alto as it is known, is short — less than 4 km long — but steep, and the descent proved treacherous in the rain. There were a number of crashes, both on the descent and at various points in the course.

“You had to take chances to get a winning time,” Tuft acknowledged, “If you were just trying to get through the day, you had to slow down on some of those curves to avoid sliding.” The suffering of Mount Alto was alleviated somewhat by cheering crowds and children who ran alongside the riders.

Normally, at this point in the race, a time cut would be imposed, knocking many riders out of the remaining stages. Given the TT results, this would have eliminated thirty-five riders and nearly one entire team. However, due to the weather conditions, the Tour de Georgia extended the time limit so that all riders are eligible to start Stage 4.

While Armstrong clocked a disappointing performance, Floyd Landis (Phonak) demonstrated his new role as captain of the team is well deserved, placing 1st with a time of .39’58″090. Landis stepped into the team leader role following Tyler Hamilton’s two year suspension.

Although the stage did not produce as many fiery performances as can be the case in some time trials, it means that the remaining stages will likely be intense. If Armstrong is to defend his 2004 Tour de Georgia victory, the Discovery team will need to raise the stakes, as Phonak tries to ensure that Landis retains the leader’s jersey.

The top Canadian was 8-time Canadian National Time Trial champion Eric Wohlberg (Symmetrics) with a time of .43’10″270 for 27th place. Geoff Kabush (Jittery Joe’s) was 29th at .43’16″160, Gord Fraser (Health Net) was 30th at 43’20″950, and Svein Tuft, 31st at 43’21″860.

The top five Canadian GC contenders are Eric Wohlberg (Symmetrics) at 23rd, Svein Tuft (Symmetrics) at 26th, Mark Walters (Navigators) at 28th, Michael Barry (Discovery) at 33rd, and Gord Fraser (Health Net) at 40th.

The Best Young Rider category is led by Trent Lowe (Jittery Joe’s) with Canadian Christian Meier (Symmetrics) in 7th.

Friday’s Stage 4 marks the start of the mountain stages with 18,000 feet of climbing over 213.4 km. Saturday provides yet another epic stage covering 182.4 km with 15000 feet of climbing finishing up on the crushing Brasstown Bald.
