September 8, 2002, Alcoy, Spain – Stage 2 of the Vuelta a España was
surprisingly won by Italian Danilo Di Luca at the end of a mass sprint with
Erik Zabel in second place and Oscar Camenzind coming in third.
The overall classification is unchanged with Joseba Beloki still leading.

The Italian recorded his seventh win of the season after winning the Trofeo
Laigueglia, stage 4 of the Vuelta a Valencia, two stages of the Tirreno
Adriatico race, the GP Fred Mengoni and the Giro del Veneto in
2002. It was his first success in the Vuelta a España in which he has been
competing since 2000.
