July 17, 2009 (Massif du Sud, Quebec) – The track at Massif du Sud is extremely wet with rain falling throughout the weekend. It’s the same track that all riders rave about during the Quebec cup, with some small added features (jumps etc).

Despite being on the start list, Steve Smith (BC) MS Evil Racing is not racing due to sponsorship obligations and the UCI requirement that national champions race in their national championship jersey at world cups. Instead, Smith has elected to stay home and train in Whistler until Tuesday when he will head to the DH World Cup at Mont-Ste Anne.

Female DH favourite Claire Buchar (BC) Chain Reaction Cycles/Intense stomped the field, qualifying by almost 25 seconds ahead of second place Danice Uyesegi (BC). Buchar’s time would have seeded her mid pack in the men’s qualifications and she has the added advantage of training with her new husband and perennial World Cup shredder, Chris Kovarik (AUS).
