DarkCross w/$3,500 Purse – A Night-time CX Race on Sept. 15 in Winnipeg

release by Fort Garry Bike Club/Red River Racing

August 30, 2012 (Winnipeg, MB) – A $3,500 purse is up for grabs at an event that combines the energy of a bicycle race with the social vibe of a dance club, creating an atmosphere that is entertaining and electrifying for both racers and spectators alike.

Like a human-powered steeplechase, the carnival that is cyclocross, which has held generations of Europeans in thrall, is now one of the fastest growing sports in North America. Not only is it fun to race, but with its rabid, cowbell-toting super fans, it’s also a blast to watch. Last year’s inaugural DarkCross race was described by one attendee as “the best cycling event in Manitoba in 20 years, maybe ever,” and this year’s looks set to eclipse it.

Well on its way to becoming the premier event in Manitoba’s cycling calendar, DarkCross has turned the excitement up a few notches by including a course that has racers climbing up the grandstand right through the heart of the crowd, a traditional Flemish beer garden, floodlights, tiki flames and DJs. Among the highlights of this year’s race will be the debut of the Qualico Homes flyover bridge—this isn’t just riding around a dirt track oval! Local garage rockers The Vibrating Beds will be playing between the races, keeping the energy high throughout the evening.

James Buhler, partner at Wallace + Wallace stated, “As a sponsorship opportunity, DarkCross really ticked all the boxes for us at Wallace + Wallace—a well-run, family-friendly, sustainability-minded, physical fitness event—wrapped-up in an exciting package. We’re proud to be back as the title sponsor for DarkCross 2012.”

The racing begins at 5:00PM, with the elite men’s race starting at 9:30PM. All racers must have a valid UCI race license in order to participate in the A, B, or C races, but unlicensed riders are welcome to participate in the Open class race. So unlike most organized bike races, anyone can race! Bring a friend or two and introduce them to the exhilaration of cyclocross.

Racers pay $20, Open racers $10. Kids and spectators are free. Registration, directions and more information available at the DarkCross website here.
