February 19, 2005 – The UBC Biomechanics Lab is looking for experienced cyclists to participate in a study on the effect of pedalling cadence on muscle output with and without restricted movement. You’ll be asked to peddle at various cadences at 200 watts output on a stationary bike for approximately 30 minutes (moderate effort for anyone with a sub 14.0 flying 200). Surface electrodes will be attached (with tape) to various muscle groups of the lower leg. As part of the experiment, you’ll be fitted with orthotics, which restrict ankle movement. The orthotic molding and fitting will take place at BCIT, Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics. The cycling will take place at UBC, School of Human Kinetics. Transportation will be provided if requested. Total participation time is about four hours.
There is no remuneration for your participation but you will have a chance to see how experiments on the Biomechanics of cyclists are conducted. You’ll also be helping researchers understand body mechanics related to cycling. A copy of the results will be available once the study is complete.
