January 18, 2011 – We’re seeking people interested in volunteer opportunities as Race Timing Technicians and willing to learn to use Cycling BC’s mountain bike race timing system and helping the sport grow in BC. We are also recruiting people interested in occasional work as Cycling BC Event Representatives (ERs) to assist with race registration at major BC events for Road, Mountain Bike, and Cyclo-cross.

Race Timing Technicians
Cycling BC is recruiting people interested in learning to use Cycling BC’s mountain bike race timing system in order to expand the number of people who can operate the equipment at BC mountain bike races.

If you are interested in helping the sport grow and can be available several weekends each year to help with timing at mountain bike races, then Cycling BC is interested in hearing from you.

The ideal Race Timing Technician candidate is someone who has a background in the sport as a rider, parent or family member of a rider, or as a volunteer (e.g. race organizer, course marshal, coach, official). Some basic knowledge about the various types of mountain bike race that are typically held in BC is an asset, as is basic familiarity with computers and office software such as Microsoft Excel.

Remuneration:
While this is primarily a volunteer role, trained and certified Race Timing Technicians are paid an honorarium of $150 / day (for each assignment, technicians are paid for 1 travel / setup day and for each race day).
Timers are also paid mileage at $0.37 / km, and are given accommodation by the race organizer if the race is more than a 150 km round trip away (or if it involves a trip on BC Ferries).

– An estimate of your availability on weekends during spring and summer 2011

Timing system training will be conducted in early March, 2011 and is mandatory for all Race Timing Technician candidates (Cycling BC may be able to help with travel cost for those who live some distance away). New timing technicians will also serve as an assistant timer at an early season race in order to gain field experience.

Event Representatives
Cycling BC is recruiting people interested in occasional work as Cycling BC Event Representatives (ERs) for the Road, Mountain Bike, and Cyclo-cross Disciplines. ERs assist with race registration at major BC events in each discipline and represent the Cycling BC Office. Specific responsibilities include:

– Assisting the race organization with sign-in and start list creation, specifically to solve membership and licensing issues, and to ensure that the start lists are created in the correct format
– Working with the Commissaires, Timing Technicians and Organizer to produce race results
– Overseeing the Cycling BC part of the awards ceremonies, to ensure that leaders jerseys, championship jerseys and medals are correctly awarded

Ideal Event Representative Candidates have a background in the sport as a rider, parent or family member of a rider, or as a volunteer (e.g. race organizer, course marshal, coach, official). Some basic knowledge of cycling races is an asset, as is basic familiarity with computers and office software such as Microsoft Excel.
