Cycling BC March Break Youth Camp at Burnaby Velodrome Report, Photos

release by Cycling BC
March 21, 2013 (Burnaby, B.C.) – The Cycling BC March Break Youth Camp kicked off on Tuesday with a morning track session at the Burnaby Velodrome, and an off-bike seminar in the afternoon. Twenty youth riders 12 to 18 years old took part in the three hour track session.

All riders were treated by a visit from former BC high performance team member Boris Martin in the Velofix.ca Mercedes Sprinter van. Boris set up shop all morning at the Velodrome to tune up the camp members’ bikes to make sure things are in top shape for the remainder of the camp. Many thanks to Velofix.ca for being a part of the camp.

The afternoon in-class session was highlighted by a visit from National Track Sprint Team member Scott Mulder, who gave some great insight into the world of track sprint racing and talked about his journey in the sport. The session was finished with a brief goal-setting session for all riders.

The second day of the camp started off with a two hour road ride. Riders were able to test their legs up the Heritage Mountain climb, and through the scenic and hilly roads of Anmore and Belcarra. Thank you to Houshang Amiri for driving support for the ride.

Camp participants were in for a real treat in the afternoon with an indoor cycling class at TAG Cycling in North Vancouver. Olympians Lesley Tomlinson and Gina Grain led the one hour session along with TAG coach Bryan Kelly. The power meter-equipped bikes were fully set up for each individual when they arrived. Riders worked on drills to improve pedaling technique, and were able to use the power meter bikes to gauge efforts in performing a team pursuit-style workout. Lesley shared some fantastic training information and racing stories throughout to keep the workout fresh and interesting, and the session ended with a spirited “whistle sprint drill” from Gina Grain.

A big thank you to all the sponsors who have made this camp possible.
