The cornerstone of the center will be a 250 meter Velodrome. This exciting center will also include:
– a sport science centre;
– recreation centre and fitness facility.
Subject to land availability, the Multi-Sport Event Center will also be surrounded by additional outdoor cycling trails/roads. The Multi-Sport Event Center will likely be owned and operated by a municipality.

Velodrome
In 2009, Cycling BC established a vision to build a velodrome that would meet international competition standards and provide a third local competition and training venue for track cyclists in British Columbia. BC is fortunate to have an indoor velodrome in Burnaby and outdoor velodrome in Victoria. Both these existing facilities will remain important to their respective communities as well as to the overall development of track cycling in BC.
Sport Science Centre
This Event Center will include a comprehensive sport science area that will be able to support the needs to all athletes. The Sport Science Center will include all the equipment necessary to provide High Performance Cyclists with valuable training support. This component of the centre will be similar to the Pacific Institute of Sport Excellence.
Outdoor Trails and Competition Facilities
It is anticipated that the Event Center will include a range of outdoor cycling trails (click HERE for photos) and pathways to support racing. The amount and size of these trails and pathways will be adjusted based on the footprint of the eventual location. A similar concept was recently constructed in the UK (link HERE). This Cyclo-park facility opened in May 2011 and includes a BMX track, mountain bike trails, a road circuit, and cycle-cross course.

Naming Rights
The collaborative design process between Cycling BC, Field Hockey BC and our architects led to early discussions with interested parties regarding the naming rights for the facility. We expect these discussion to continue and likely broaden to include other interested parties.
Partnership – Field Hockey
Cycling BC and Field Hockey BC are the founding partners in the development of this exciting center. Other sports organizations are expected to be added as program partners as the project moves forward. As founding partners, both Cycling BC and Field Hockey BC intend to ensure that priority access will be provided to our sports for the life of the center.
Land and Location
Very positive discussions have already taken place with one municipality willing to offer land for the Event Center. Other municipalities are already exploring this type of facility and the City of Coquitlam is about to undertake a feasibility study for a covered multi-sport facility. Cypress Mountain Bike Park
Over the past four years, Cycling BC has been in dialogue with the owner/operators of Cypress Mountain Ski Resort in an effort to have the mountain re-open the bike park that previously operated during the summer months.
A variety of logistical barriers existed in the years leading up to the 2010 Olympics that made it impossible for the mountain to consider a summer bike park. After the 2010 Olympics, Cycling BC renewed our efforts and submitted a proposal over the past summer that would see Cycling BC lease access to the mountain and at least one chair lift over the summer months in 2013.
The dialogue with Cypress Mountain is ongoing and we will continue to explore all possible options to have the bike park re-open. For their part, the owners of the mountain have been open to discussion and honest in their assessment of the profitability of a bike park venture on Cypress.
With that in mind, Cycling BC is forming a stakeholder group in an effort to bring together all the parties that would like to be involved with this effort to re-open the bike park.

I am startled at the naivete I am seeing from cyclists about the blatant attempt by Cycling BC to divert attention from the current issues. Its like giving a kid a piece of candy while you steal his bike. A velodrome in conjunction with Field Hockey BC? Funds and land yet to be secured? Announced while waiting for the second coming of an AGM? With the race program derailled? And Coquitlam? (Sure makes the Burnaby Velodrome feel like they have been kept in the loop). I believe this falls into the category of “distraction”. Get informed, come to the AGM and vote, and ensure improved cycling in B.C., in all areas and disciplines, is the top priority!

Yes sir, more smoke and mirrors from Keith Ryan and Co. at CBC. How about serrvicing the membership instead of alienating them and firing the provincial coach and not honouring the contracts of others. Maybe Cycling BC made so much money from hosting the UCI BMX Supercross they are pumping it back into other discplines. Maybe a master plan will be unveiled at the AGM and they needed the extra time and room to prepare and present on a jumbotron screen. Maybe Lance raced clean.
Come out to the AGM and help to clean up the mess. Exercise your power of membership to vote.
