Cross-Canada Charity Ride Ends Tragically

July 1, 2008 – Two cyclists on a cross-Canada ride organized by Daniel Hurtubise, 50, and his two children Sonia and Alex, to raise money to fight Type 1 diabetes were struck and killed by a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway on Sunday near Brandon, Man., according to the Globe and Mail. Robert Carrier, 45, a cancer survivor, was with the group and both he and Hurtubise died after a car that was passing the group of four riders cut in too early and side-swiped them. Hurtubise’ children were also injured and Sonia remained in hospital while Alex was released. Their cross-Canada ride began on June 14 in Vancouver and they hoped to raise half a million dollars.
