September 15, 2012 (Haliburton, ON) – Derek Zandstra (Scott-3Rox Racing) edged out teammate Geoff Kabush to win the opening Stage 1 from Haliburton Forest to Camp White Pine, 70km, as the fourth annual Crank the Shield got underway in rainy conditions. Norco’s Andrew L’Esperance was third while Tricia Spooner (The Cyclery) was the top woman with Cayley Brooks (Trek Canada) in second. Andrew Watson and Hayley Smith (Norco Factory) topped the the mixed team field while Cameron Jette and Kyle Douglas (Scott-3Rox Racing) lead the men’s team division.
