Crabtree Int\’l UCI/BMX 2005 – Elite Report

July 11, 2005 – Under the hot, humid and sunny skies in Crabtree, QC, the last of the 2005 UCI overall points qualifiers was run after being postponed due to rain on Saturday. Coming out on top, was current world champ Warwick Stevenson from Australia (Haro).

With some serious first straight pull, Stevenson lead the entire main, after Robert DeWilde from The Netherlands (Maxxis/Troy Lee Designs) had a tragic gate start. Impressive was Canada’s own Aaron Lepp from Alberta (Supercross/Fly) who was in second until DeWilde reeled him in, then a bit of bad luck sent him into fourth behind Australian Jamie Gray (Haro). Lepp is in his first year as a Sr. Elite, and as one of Canada’s rising stars he’s one to look for to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games where BMX will debut.

In Elite women action it was Alberta’s 5-time World Champ Samantha Cools (Supercross/Fly) taking the win in the combined Jr & Sr class. There was an awesome battle all day in qualifiers between Québec’s Mélanie Desrochers and Alberta’s Christine Miller, but in the main it was Desrochers holding onto second with Miller in third.

The Junior men were on fire, with Alberta’s Partick Lebel busting out of the gate and jumping the Pro section, taking home the main event win, along with teammates in Justin Gundlock second and Matt Yoisten in third.

The fine folks at Crabtree BMX, especially organizer Dylan Vanier did an outstanding job in preparation for this event, proving once again that their track is one of the best in Canada.
