June 25, 2007 (Blainville, QC) — Charles Dionne (Colavita/Sutter Home) took both the fourth and final 62.7km stage of the Coupe de la Paix criterium races and ended up as the overall winner in the four-stage series. Dionne made his break on the eighteenth lap of the 33-lap course and Eric Boily (EVA-Devinci) stayed with him until the finish. The real battle was for third place, which was won by Ryan McKenzie (Volkswagen/Trek), just ahead of Greg Reain (Calyon/Litespeed).
Dionne told Pedal that, “this is the fifth race that I’ve done in six days, having competed in the Rochester (Saturn Rochester Twilight Criterium in New York State) on Saturday. I flew from Quebec City to Montreal to Toronto and rented a car there to make Rochester.”
“Then there was traffic and once at Rochester, I had to rebuild my bike. I only had three hours sleep in a Toronto hotel before Sunday’s (third Coupe de la Paix criterium) race in Montreal North,” Dionne continued, “But I wasn’t worried (today). I wanted (Eric) Boily to make the break with me because he’s strong and we made a good team.”(note: they were ahead of the chase group by more than a minute near the end of today’s crit.)
Dionne was still coughing from his cold that has stayed on Dionne’s wheel all through the Coupe de la Paix.
Boily told Pedal that, “We attacked after the sprint. Dionne and I had to get away from the three VW-Trek riders who were also attacking. Dionne won because he’s stronger and has more experience, but I’m happy to be second.”
FQSC Director, Louis Barbeau thought that Dionne played it smart today, “but ultimately won because he’s strong.” Barbeau also insisted that Dionne’s lack of Colavita/Sutter Home team mates was “…not really a disadvantage considering how strong Dionne rode.”
Dionne also won in overall points, while Keven Lacombe (Volkswagen-Trek) and Nick Rowe (Volkswagen-Trek) took second and third spots. Lacombe was the only rider positioned to challenge Dionne in overall points today, but a crash on the last lap meant that he DNF’d.
A scratched-up but still witty Lacombe told Pedal, “A guy fell in front of me and I felt obliged to fall on top of him.” Lacombe, whose injuries were not serious, also crashed on Sunday.
Today’s criterium through Blainville, a suburb north of Montreal, was run on a 1.9km course notably characterized by a big climb on des Chateaux Blvd.
