Coup de la Paix — Stage 2 Full Results

June 21, 2007 (Montreal, QC) – Charles Dionne (Colavita/Sutter Home) won another victory at today’s 50km Stage 2 criterium at the Coupe de la Paix held in Mascouche.

A torrential downpour preceded the race but luckily the clouds cleared just in time for the start of this evening’s event at 7:10 p.m. The 1.9km circuit dried quickly and after a few futile break attempts, the race played out on the final sprint that was easily won by Dionne. Keven Lacombe (Volkswagen/Trek) took second, followed by Eric Boily (EVA/Devinci) in third while Eric Lyman (Calyon/Litespeed) was fourth.

“I don’t have any team mates here so I had to ride in a smart fashion, which I did tonight,” recounted Dionne as he fought a persistent cough. “It was a fast circuit and I knew not to risk a break. The race came down to a final sprint and I launched myself early which I think that made the difference.”

Dionne is leading the series overall with 400 points. In second place is Lacombe with 350 points, followed by Lyman at 330.

Ryan McKenzie (Volkswagen/Trek) had been in second overall but unfortunately crashed this evening with two laps to go. According to criterium rules, riders who crash less than 5km from the finish cannot rejoin the pack without a penalty.

Dionne will be wearing the leader’s yellow jersey on Sunday for Stage 3 starting at 11:30 a.m on the streets of Montreal North. The 1km circuit on Sunday takes riders along Pie IX Blvd, Prieur, des Recollets, and Monselet streets. The Coupe de la Paix wraps up on Monday, June 25, with a 1.9km race in Blainville.
