October 20, 2007 — World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) President, Dick Pound, turned on his former VP and protégé, Jean-Francois Lamour yesterday according to CP. Until recently, observers thought that WADA would anoint Lamour as its next president at a November 17 vote in Madrid, Spain. Instead, Lamour has now stepped out of the race and former dark horse, John Fahey, an Australian, is therefore running unopposed for the WADA presidency.
Pound suggested that Lamour was “not the right person” to be entrusted with WADA’s leadership. This was in response to Lamour’s claims of an Anglo-Saxon conspiracy to make Fahey the next WADA president, that the organization was “discredited” and that WADA was regressing by 10 years.
Lamour is a former French sports minister. Fahey was premier of New South Wales when Sydney, Australia advanced its bid for the 2000 Olympics. After being defeated as premier, Fahey went on to become the Australian finance minister. Fahey is also credited with acting fast to help prevent an assassination attempt on Prince Charles during in 1994.
