Commonwealth Games Men’s RR Report, Full Results, Photos – Geraint Thomas Wins

by pedalmag.com

August 03, 2014 (Glasgow, Scotland) – Rain-soaked conditions plagued the men’s 12-lap 168.2km road race as Geraint Thomas (Wales) prevailed with a bold attack on the final lap to gain a strong gap on his two rivals in the 3-rider break. A late race wheel change was almost his undoing but Jack Bauer (New Zealand) and Scott Thwaites (England) were unaware of his troubles as the Welsh rider held on to claim the gold with Bauer out-sprinting Thwaites for the bronze.

Earlier on Canada’s Svein Tuft and Will Routely were two Canadian survivors in a chase group of 26 riders trying to catch Peter Kennaugh (Isle of Man) who made a brave attack just after the start and stayed away for most of the race in horrific conditions.

At the halfway point Kennaugh had 1:55 on the chasers and soon after Tuft needed a wheel change which made it too tough for him and Routely to catch back on as the pace was starting to pick up. Soon after with 50km to go three riders Thomas, Bauer and Thwaites caught Kennaugh and then dropped him.

Aussie Caleb Ewan made a valiant effort to bridge to the leaders and put Australia in contention but it was in vein as the writing was on the wall. He was eventually caught and was the last rider to finish in 12th.

On the final lap Thomas attacked with no response from his rivals and his advantage kept growing to around 45s at one point – lucky for him because a sudden unexpected wheel change almost cost him the race but he was back on course before the two chasers knew of his dilemma and he soloed in for the victory.

Of the 140 starters only 12 finished
