(MONTREAL, PQ) November 23, 2002 – On the first day of its semi-annual Board meeting this weekend, the Board of Directors of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) approved a new $8.7-million Excellence Fund as part of its new investment strategy to support the high-performance sport system, including direct funding for athletes and coaches.

“We believe that Canadian athletes have great potential for international success and the Board recognized the value of having a new fund that focuses our investment strategy to help more of these athletes get to the Olympic podium,” said COC President Michael Chambers. “This fund will also enhance collaboration among our major funding partners and improve efficiency through a new sport review process.”

The new Fund is a consolidation of six existing COC funding programs in addition to a surplus from operational efficiencies. The only other funding program not included in the Excellence Fund is the COC's existing High Performance Support Program, which this year distributed $5.25 million to 52 National Sport Federations (NSFs). This program will be rolled into the Excellence Fund in January 2005, as approved by the COC Board in June 2002.

To ensure that support from the Excellence Fund is targeted appropriately, a Sport Review Committee – comprised of mainly external sport representatives – is meeting with each NSF over the next few months to identify athletes with the potential for a podium finish at the 2003 Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and for podium or top 8 results at the 2004 and 2006 Olympic Games. The COC expects to announce the first recipients of the Excellence Fund in early 2003.

The COC's new investment strategy supports the organization's focus on high-performance sport excellence and rewards potential future success rather than past performance. The new strategy also accounts for differences in the needs of each sport rather than using the same funding formula for all sports.

The COC, a private, not-for-profit corporation, is the largest private-sector benefactor of high-performance sport in Canada. It is responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the Olympic movement, including Canada's participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games. Le Comité olympique canadien approuve un Fonds d'excellence de 8,7 $ millions

(MONTRÔ°AL, PQ) le 23 novembre 2002 – Le premier jour de la rencontre de son conseil d'administration, le Comité olympique canadien (COC) a approuvé un nouveau Fonds d'excellence de 8,7 $ millions. Ce Fonds, qui financera directement les athlètes et les entraîneurs, est la pierre angulaire de sa nouvelle stratégie d'investissement qui appuie le sport de haut niveau.

“Nous croyons que les athlètes canadiens possèdent un grand potentiel de succès au niveau international. Le conseil d'administration reconnaît l'importance de ce nouveau fonds qui s'assure d'aider un plus grand nombre d'athlètes à gravir le podium olympique,” a indiqué Michael Chambers, président du COC. “Le Fonds d'excellence aidera aussi à nous rapprocher de nos partenaires de financement, et améliorera l'efficacité de nos opérations.”

Le nouveau fonds est le résultat de la consolidation de six programmes de financement du COC et d'un surplus provenant d'économies d'exploitation. Le seul autre fonds restant, le Programme d'appui au sport de haut niveau, a servi à distribuer 5,25 $ millions à 52 Fédérations nationales de sport (FNS) cette année. En juin 2002, le conseil d'administration du COC a approuvé son incorporation au Fonds d'excellence dès janvier 2005.

Afin d'assurer une allocation adéquate du Fonds d'excellence, un comité de révision du sport composé essentiellement de représentants du sport de haut niveau, a initié une série de rencontres avec chaque FNS qui se poursuivra au cours des prochains mois. Ce comité a comme rôle d'identifier les athlètes qui démontrent le potentiel de remporter une médaille aux Jeux panaméricains de 2003 à Saint-Domingue et de terminer parmi les 8 premiers aux Jeux olympiques de 2004 et 2006. Le COC annoncera les premiers récipiendaires du Fonds d'excellence au début de l'année 2003.

La nouvelle stratégie d'investissement du COC concrétise son engagement envers l'excellence en sport de haut niveau. Elle représente une évolution de sa stratégie d'investissement. L'ancienne stratégie récompensait les résultats sportifs du passé alors que la nouvelle formule est basée sur le potentiel de succès de chaque athlète. La stratégie prend aussi en considération les particularités de chaque sport au lieu d'utiliser une seule formule de financement pour tous.

Le COC, corporation privée sans but lucratif, est le principal bailleur de fonds privé du sport de haut niveau au Canada.
