December 15, 2005 (Vancouver. B.C.) – Club Fat Ass, a grassroots athletic club that helps athletes host free running events, has released an online training log that allows athletes to publicly articulate their New Years fitness resolutions. According to researchers, most of us make heath and fitness-related resolutions at this time of year and yet only a fraction of us actually achieve those goals.
Ean Jackson, a business consultant, university instructor and organizer of a New Years Day resolution run figures it’s because we don’t put our resolutions on paper. “Plenty of studies show a common trait of overachievers is that they write their goals down. By sharing those goals with peers, the odds of them being achieved goes way up,” says Jackson. “Health and fitness are the most popular resolutions. In the New Years Day event, all runners are asked to spend the first 20 minutes of the run together getting to know one another with a discussion of their New Years running resolutions. I figured we needed a simple way to list our New Years resolutions so we would stand a better chance of achieving them.”
To help runners in his event keep track of their goals, Jackson looked to the Internet and Club Fat Ass. Using its innovative Web 2.0 website from Vancouver-based Bryght , the Club was able to provide Jackson with an online training log (blog) where his event participants could articulate and share their resolutions.
Sibylle Tinsel of Club Fat Ass, adds, “Feedback from runners around the world made it clear that there was a much wider interest for the resolution monitoring service than just Jackson’s event. Everyone who has heard of this thinks it’s a great idea. We looked at it and decided that what was missing was a way to track how well people did relative to their goals, so we turned it into a contest, as well,” said Tinsel. “The people at Bryght who provide the Club website community infrastructure say it can handle a lot of traffic, so we decided to make this free service available to anyone, anywhere in the world with fitness oriented resolutions.”
The Club plans to offer recognition prizes at the end of the year to the five people who come the closest to achieving the goals they set for themselves this New Years Day.
