Six bicycle groups have been awarded 2002 IMBA/Clif Bar Trail Preservation
Grants. The $500 grants – the latest in a series of Clif Bar-sponsored IMBA
grants that began last year – support projects that preserve and enhance
trail access, promote environmental education, and inspire conservation in
the mountain bicycling community.

Past grant-winning projects include the construction of interpretive trail
signage, riparian habitat restoration, environmental education materials,
and kids mountain bike projects.

Tim Blumenthal. “They’re always thinking of new ways to help mountain
biking. These grants inspire our affiliated clubs to blend conservation work
with their trail development efforts.”

more than 50,000 CLIF Bars to fuel IMBA-affiliated trailbuilding and
maintenance projects.The 2002 IMBA/Clif Bar Trail Preservation Grant first-round winners are:

SHARE Mountain Bike Club, Orange County, CA – The group will restore a
section of trail that was destroyed by fire in Crystal Cove State Park.

Great Divide Cycling Team, Helena, MT – They’ll develop a comprehensive map
and brochure that will include information on trail status, rules of the
trail and ecology of the area.

Bridgerland Mountain Bike Patrol, Salt Lake City, UT – The patrol will
construct interpretive signs along a portion of the 100-mile Bonneville
Shoreline Trail to educate users on trail etiquette, the role of fire in the
ecosystem and the impacts of urban sprawl on wildlife.

Methow Valley Sports Association, Winthrop, WA – The group will construct
12-15 interpretive trail signs that will educate users about trail access
issues, wildlife habitat and conservation needs.

Yellow Breeches Racing/New Frontiers Sprockids, Carlisle, PA – The club will
work with the local Sprockids chapter to build a network of environmentally
sound trails.

Vermont Mountain Bike Advocates, Waterbury, VT – VMBA is working with the U.
S. Forest Service to improve multi-use trails through carefully considered
reroutes, rolling grade dips and other IMBA approved techniques.

Clif Bar Inc.’s investment in trail preservation will continue later this
year, when Clif and IMBA team to award six more grants. The application
deadline for the next round is July 1 and recipients will be announced on
July 15.
