Clasica San Sebastian Report, Full Results – Gallopin Wins

report by the UCI

July 27, 2013 – Tony Gallopin (Radioshack-Leopard) confirmed his huge potential and huge talent with a solo victory in the Clasica San Sebastian UCI WorldTour race in Spain. The 25 year-old Frenchman attacked alone on the late Arkale climb and used his time trialing ability to hold off the chasers and win alone. It was Gallopin’s first ride in the one-day Classic and his first victory since 2011 but confirmed his pedigree as one of the next generation of high quality French riders.

Spain’s Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was the favourite before the start but had to accept second place, finishing 28 seconds down on Gallopin. He beat Roman Kreuziger (Saxo-Tinkoff) Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Nicolas Roche (Saxo-Tinkoff) and Mikel Landa (Euskaltel-Euskadi) but their combined efforts were unable to catch Gallopin on the run-in to the centre of San Sebastian.

As usual the second assault of the Jaizkibel and the Arkale climbs saw a series of attacks that shaped the Clasica di San Sebastian.

The Movistar team chased down the early breakaway of the race and then Nairo Quintana and Valverde attacked together on the lower slopes of the Jaizkibel. They sparked the key selection on the climb and then Valverde emerged as part of a strong front group.

However Gallopin was not afraid to take on his bigger-name rivals. He attacked alone on the Arkale, 15km from the finish and never looked back. The five chasers tried to pull him back but could not close the gap.

Thanks to his victory, Gallopin scored 80 UCI WorldTour points. Valverde scored 60 points and Kreuziger scored 50 points.

“It’s been a difficult season for me and even the Tour de France wasn’t great because missed out on a win. However I like one-day Classics and I felt super, super good,” Gallopin said after pulling on the traditional winner’s Txapela beret.

“This is the first time I’ve ridden the Clasica but I was up front and felt good. I’m really happy to have beaten riders of the calibre of Alejandro Valverde and Roman Kreuziger. This a super result for me.”

Froome remains the leader of the UCI WorldTour

Tour de France winner Chris Froome (Team Sky) did not ride the Clasica San Sebastian but retained the lead in the individual ranking of the UCI WorldTour.

Froome took the lead by winning the Tour de France and scored 200 points. He has a total of 587 points and currently leads Peter Sagan (Cannondale) by 178 points, with Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) third a further 19 points behind.

Team Sky also leads the team standings, while Spain leads the nations ranking.

The UCI WorldTour continues this week with the Tour de Pologne stage race. Giro d’Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), 2012 Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) and Fabian Cancellara (Radioshack-Leopard) are all in action in the race that ends on Sunday August 3.
