Clara Hughes to Make Cycling Comeback – Aims for London 2012

November 17, 2010 – Clara Hughes, 38, one of Canada’s most decorated athletes and first Canadian to medal in both Summer and Winter Olympics, is coming out of retirement and getting back on the bike with aspirations for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, reports the Toronto Star. Hughes told the Star she still sees potential for improvement in her cycling, despite having already won two Olympic bronze medals in the sport at the Atlanta Games in 1996. The Order of Canada winner will train with a new coach in Montreal, focusing specifically on the team pursuit on the track, a new Olympic event, and the individual time trial on the road. With another Olympic medal she’d become Canada’s most decorated Olympian.

“This is great news for cycling and the sport at all levels in Canada. The fact Clara [Hughes] has the confidence in our programs to invest her time and energy and believes we can be Olympic medal contenders at the Games in London in 2012 is a great testimonial for what we’ve accomplished so far,” commented Canadian Track coach, Richard Wooles. “I am really looking forward to seeing her on the track some time soon. We hope her return will inspire more people to get involved with cycling,”
