August 27, 2003 (Whistler, B.C.) – Organizers of the 20th annual Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic Mountain Bike Race have joined forces with Whistler Blackcomb, Resort Municipality of Whistler and Tourism Whistler with the goal of building Whistler's original mountain bike race into a resort event.

“This partnership will allow us to keep this legendary event leading-edge by developing event programming, enhancing the marketing program, and solidifying the event infrastructure,” says event producer Grant Lamont of Endorphin Enterprises.

“The Cheakamus Challenge is an established and recognized mountain bike race, and we are keen to build on its success over time with events that attract more racers, as well as visitors keen to experience the mountain bike scene in Whistler,” said Rob McSkimming of Whistler Blackcomb. “Starting this year, special accommodation and activity offers will be available for both race entrants and spectators.”

Now in its twentieth year, the Cheakamus Challenge is one of North America's longest-running cross country mountain bike races. Stretching from Squamish to Whistler, the 71-kilometre-long race will climb 2,070 metres and features a mix of single track, climbs and super fast riding along the stunning Cheakamus River canyon, through old growth forest trails, Whistler Mountain Bike Park and into Whistler Village.

Last year's winners were World Champion Roland Green in the men's field and Nikki Kassels in the women's. This year's race promises to see a range of local and international participants from amateurs to world champions and juniors to masters riders.

The event takes place September 20 with a 10:00 a.m. race start at the Squamish District Airport, and finishes in Whistler Village. Sign-up begins at 8:00 a.m. and entries will be capped at 800 racers. The day will wrap up with the award ceremonies at the Whistler BrewHouse from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Winners will receive cash prizes, value to be determined by the number of entrants. The early bird entry fee is $50.00 and a one-day Cycling B.C. license is available for $5.00. Pre-registration is recommended.
