Changes To National Junior Team Road Program

May 20, 2004 – The CCA would like to announce a change to the junior
national team road program for 2004. In order to minimize travel costs for
the athletes and for the CCA coaching staff, and in order to give the
greatest opportunity for the coaches to interact with the athletes, the CCA
will hold a brief camp immediately after the Tim Hortons National Road
Cycling Championships in Kamloops, which take place June 24-27.

After the junior road race (Friday, June 25), the CCA will nominate 10
junior men and eight junior women to the worlds pool (see selection
procedure below). These athletes will be invited to the three-day camp,
which will also be held in Kamloops, from June 28-30. The camp will end by
midday on June 30.

CCA coaches will use the camp to evaluate the athletes and get to know them
better. The selection procedure will then continue as previously published,
minus the junior men’s camp originally planned for the week before Abitibi.
Accommodation costs for the camp, including the night of June 27, will be
covered by the CCA, but athletes will be responsible for their meals.

Junior athletes are encouraged to book their travel to nationals with a
flexible return date so they can stay in Kamloops for the camp if they are
invited. Camp attendance is obligatory for athletes who wish to do the
worlds – exemptions will only be granted in extreme circumstances.

Junior Road World Championships Section Process

– The CCA will nominate 10 junior men and 8 junior women to the worlds pool
based on the results of the National Championships time trial (June 24) and
road race (June 25) in Kamlooops, B.C., as follows:

– All medal winners will be automatically nominated, with the remainder of
the pool selected based on observation by the CCA coaches

– These 18 athletes will be invited to a three-day camp in Kamloops to be
held June 28-30. The CCA will pay for accommodation.

– Junior men: After the Tour de l’Abitibi, which the athletes will do with
their provincial or club teams, the pool will be reduced to five athletes
based on recommendation by the CCA coach present. These athletes will
travel to Europe in September to compete in the Rüebliland GP (Sept. 10-12)
and the Giro di Basilicata (Sept. 16-19). The final four-rider worlds team
will be chosen after these events by the CCA coach in charge of the
project; the national champion is automatically selected. This project is
entirely funded by the CCA.

– Junior women: Due to the lack of international junior women’s races, the
eight riders nominated to the junior women’s pool will attend a camp in
Bromont, Que., from Sept. 7-17. The final four-rider worlds team will be
selected from this group based on evaluation by CCA coaches at the camp.
This project is entirely funded by the CCA.
