March 10, 2007(Fresno, CA) – Ben Jacques Maynes (Priority Health) won the opening Stage 1, Raymond Granite Road Race, 54.4km, while Canada’s Eric Wohlberg (Symmetrics) was second at the 2007 Central Valley Classic on from March 9-11 in California. Fellow Canuck Dominique Rollin (Kodak Gallery Pro Cycling Team) was 5th.
Kodak Gallery Pro Cycling Team Report
On a picture perfect day in California’s Central Valley, Canadian National Champion Dominique Rollin rode to an impressive 5th place finish for the Kodak Gallery Pro Cycling Team, presented by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. From the gun, racers set a blistering pace on the rolling, 34-mile road course located northwest of Fresno. For the entire first lap, the peloton’s high-pace kept any breakaways from opening an advantage on the field. Shortly into the second of three laps, Kodak Gallery – Sierra Nevada riders Josh Thornton and Dominique Rollin escaped in a break of approximately eleven riders. The move forced the Health Net squad to chase hard to bring the field back together.
Not long after the first breakaway was collected, a swift attack saw a second breakaway group clear the field. Dominique Rollin again represented Kodak Gallery – Sierra Nevada in the break as the rest of the team protected Josh Thornton in the field so that he could counter if the breakaway was caught.
Despite a determined effort led by Toyota-United, the field failed to reel in the breakaway. Up front and alone with no teammates in the breakaway, Rollin launched a vicious attack with 5-kilometers to go. While the move shed several weaker riders from the breakaway, those who remained slowly overtook Rollin setting up a close finish that saw Ben Jacques-Maynes capture the win.
Kodak Gallery Team Director, Robin Zellner, observed, “we were in a great position all day with Dominique up the road and Josh well protected by his teammates in the field. On a day when many teams lost riders to the time cut-off, our team rode impressively. All of our guys were safely within the time cut-off and we are excited about our potential in Saturday’s time-trail and Sunday’s crit.”
The Central Valley Classic stage race continues with a 16.5 mile individual time trial on Saturday. For directions to the race, visit the race website at: www.centralvalleyclassic.com
