September 4, 2004 – Dear CCA: Results for the Canada Cup races at Calgary (August 7-8, 2004) are posted incorrectly on the UCI’s website with the result that no riders, including several who are racing at the upcoming MTB World Championships, have not been given their UCI points earned at this event. For these races, UCI appears to have posted the results (what UCI calls the arrival order) as the starting list for the races, and has no results posted for arrival order.
Results for the Canada Cup races at Fernie (August 14-15, 2004) are not posted on UCI’s website at all. In fact, this race is not even shown as an event on their list of sanctioned events. Again, as a result, several riders who are racing at the upcoming World Championships have there not been given the UCI points they earned at this event either.
Results for the Canada Cup races at Sun Peaks (August 21-22, 2004) are also not posted on the UCI’s website, though this event is at least shown on their list of sanctioned events.
I presume that this is either because CCA has not forwarded these results to UCI or because UCI has not yet processed the results. Since UCI claim that they have processed all results received up to September 2nd in their current rankings, it would appear that CCA has not yet forwarded the results to UCI.
I also note that the CCA only posted the results of these races on the CCA website yesterday – 11 days after the event was completed. The result, once again, is that several riders who are racing at the MTB Worlds have not been given their UCI points for this event.
Your website says that “the Canada Cup Series represents the highest calibre of coordinated domestic Mountain Bike, Track and Road racing in Canada.” Please start treating it as such. Elite riders in Canada, and their families, each spend thousands and thousands of dollars to compete in the Canada Cup Series, as well as attend international races on behalf of Canada, often with no support, or scant support at best, from CCA.
My daughter’s shoestring budget just to race at the upcoming Worlds and the subsequent World Cup race in Italy is over $4,000. Your contribution to her effort: three whole days of accommodation at Les Gets (she’s there for 11) plus a bit of local transportation. And, of course, nothing whatsoever, to go on to the World Cup event in Italy. You even make her buy her own her own national team uniform from you for $150, which I have on good authority could not have cost you anywhere near that to obtain. Shame on you for making anyone pay for a national team jersey. Double shame on you if you are profiting from the transaction.
The CCA is charged with coordinating sanctioned cycling events in Canada and forwarding accurate race results to the UCI. Monitoring UCI to ensure the results are properly processed is also surely a responsibility that you have to our riders. Given your inability to provide a reasonable amount of financial support, can you at least get the paperwork right? Please ensure that these Canada Cup results are corrected in the next few days so that our Canadian riders are properly ranked at the upcoming World and World Cup events.
Sincerely,
Dan Schroeter
