CCA News: Sydney World Cup, Pan Am Champs

February 15, 2005 – Athens Olympic sprint gold medallist Lori-Ann Muenzer of Edmonton will compete in the Sydney, Australia, round of the UCI Track World Cup this weekend as her final tune-up for the World Championships in March.

Muenzer, who will compete in the Sprint and 500m time trial, heads a team of five athletes in the Sydney competition, scheduled for February 18-20.

Travis Smith of Calgary, who is already qualified for the worlds in the kilometre time trial, will be using the Sydney World Cup to gauge his fitness. Smith will be joined by Cam Mackinnon (Calgary) and Yannick Morin (Montreal) in the team sprint competition. A top-eight finish will likely qualify the team for the worlds.

Martin Gilbert (Montreal) rounds out the Canadian squad. Gilbert will be looking to qualify for the World Championships with a pair of top-8 results in the points race and the scratch race.

National track coach Eric Van den Eynde will lead the team to Sydney.

MTB Pan Am Championships postponed

The Canadian Cycling Association has received word that the Pan Am Mountain Bike Championships have been postponed until later in the year. Originally scheduled for March 11-13 in Aguascalientes, Mexico, the event has been rescheduled for October at the same location, with no precise date set. The CCA intended to send a team to the event as originally scheduled, and still intends to participate in October. Selection criteria will be adjusted accordingly and announced at a later date.
