Cascade Classic – Stages 5/6 (NRC)

July 13, 2003 – Navigators' Chris Wherry held onto his 3rd place in the overall standings as current race leader Tom Danielson (Saturn) continues to show good form at the Cascade Cycling Classic. The overall leaders came to the finish of the demanding 82-mile, 6-lap circuit road race as a breakaway group containing 10 riders, including all of the favorites; 12-seconds in front of two chasers and 22-seconds clear of the main bunch. David Clinger (Prime Alliance) took the top-step of this one (stage-5) with Danielson, Adam Sbeih (Sierra Nevada) and Wherry right behind. With no time bonuses earned for stage-wins in this event, the opportunities for shaking up the standings are determined on the road each day as each of the riders, and their teams, attack and counter-attack looking for any weakness in their competitors. The action continues for just one more stage, a 60-minute Criterium, on Sunday afternoon in the Old Mill section of Bend.

This afternoon's 60-minute criterium saw lots of aggressive racing, but no changes in the overall classification. A 14-rider breakaway was able to escape the peloton, with representation from Navigators in the form of Chris Baldwin and Ryan Guay.  With none of the G.C. leaders in attendance, it was now a race for the stage, and some bragging rights. In the final laps, the breakaways were repeatedly split by searing attacks from Baldwin, and others, but these attacks only served to increase the pace and create groups of 2-3 riders, before being re-joined shortly by the others. In the end, it was Alex Candelario (Prime Alliance) taking the win in front of local favorite Chris Horner and Tim Johnson, both Saturn. After 5-days of racing through the hilly northwestern Cascade Mountains of Oregon, it was Danielson, followed by Vaughters and Navigators' Chris Wherry in the overall classification.
