August 20, 2013 (Rome, Italy) – The Italian-based Cannondale Pro Cycling Team (previously Liquigas Cannondale) has revealed its nine-man squad for the Spanish Vuelta and Canada’s Guillaume Boivin is on board reports the Dutch RTL Nieuws. Named to the 68th edition of the Vuelta a España from August 24-Sept 15 are Cannondale team members Ivan Basso (Ita), Daniele Ratto (Ita), Tiziano Dall’Antonia (Ita), Paolo Longo Borghini (Ita), Cameron Wurf (Aus), Cayetano Sarmiento (Col), Maciej Paterski (Pol), Lucas Sebastian Haedo (Arg) and Boivin.
Boivin, 24, was the 2009 Canadian road champ. He also tied for bronze at the UCI U23 men’s road race with American Taylor Phinney in Melbourne (Geelong), Australia in 2010. A former member of the Canadian-based SpiderTech p/b C10 team from 2010-2012, Boivin joined Cannondale for the 2013 season. He was married this summer to Catherine Rainville-Avon.
The Vuelta is one of the top three Grand Tour road bike races in the world along with the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. The 68th edition of the Vuelta starts on August 24 this year in Vilanova and finishes September 15 in Madrid, some 21 stages later and 3,319km down the road. As reported earlier, fellow Canadian François Parisien (Argos-Shimano) is also expected on the start line of the 2013 Vuelta – read more here.
Because of a date conflict, Boivin’s inclusion in the 2013 Vuelta precludes him from racing in the WorldTour Grand Prix Cyclistes Quebec and Montreal on September 13 and 15 this year.
