June 16, 2019 – Canadians Alex Cataford and Benjamin Perry with the Israel Cycling Academy are earning their pay-cheques these days as Cataford won the KOM at the 73rd Gran Premio Città di Lugano last weekend and Perry took home a stage win and second overall at the Tour of Korea that just ended.
Cataford, from Ottawa, Ontario, finished 51st as the lone Canuck at the one-day 179km race in Switzerland on June 9 won by Diego Ulissi (Ita) UAE-Team Emirates. Cataford spent much of the day in the break and his hard work paid off as he took home the KOM crown while his teammate Kristian Sbaragli (Ita) finished 9th at 42 seconds behind Ulissi. Then at the recent 5-stage Tour of Korea, June 12-15, Perry from St. Catharines won the 178km Stage 3 from Danyang to Samcheok. The talented Canuck found himself in the front group with race leader, Filippo Zaccanti (Ita) Nippo Vini Fantini Faizanè, and he out-sprinted Zaccanti for the stage win and moved into second overall which he held until the end. Zaccanti won the overall. Earlier this month, Perry was 6th at Rund um Köln. Not bad for a couple of Ontario riders.
