September 27, 2014 (Ponferrada, Spain) – A devastating crash at the 93.6km mark of the Elite Women’s 127.4km road race at the 2014 Road Worlds took out many riders including three Canadians – Karol-Ann Canuel, Leah Kirchmann and Joelle Numainville. Lex Albrecht was able to continue but later abadoned on Lap 5.
According to Team Canada women’s coach, Denise Kelly, Canuel was taken by ambulence to the hospital and suffered a broken pelvis – she’ll remain in hospital until her condition stabilizes. Tough break for Canuel who recently recovered from a crash in June at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic women’s race and had a stellar Road Worlds w/TTT gold and 6th place in the ITT.
Kirchmann was treated at the hospital for a broken collarbone and has been released. Albrecht has an elbow injury and otherwise is ok while Numainville was not injured.
Cycling Canada will be releasing an official statement on the crash and the condition of all riders shortly. We wish all riders involved in the crash a speedy recovery.
