Canadian Track Championships Day 2 Report, Results + PHOTOS

by Dave Jack

January 05, 2015 (Milton, ON) – The second day of racing at the Canadian National Track Championships in the new Mattamy National Cycling Centre velodrome featured a full deck of events including Sprint and Individual Pursuit titles up for grabs with current stars, and Masters that included former luminaries such as Steve Bauer and Gord Singleton. The first three events in the men’s and women’s Omnium competitions were also contested.

There was some controversy right off the start in the men’s Omnium Points race qualification as the commissaires missed Ryan Aitcheson taking a lap, but they quickly fixed the error. The same thing happened later in the women’s Scratch race when Jamie Gilgen took a lap which was missed being recorded. Gilgen, who won of the race, was a little frustrated when the results were first announced incorrectly but all was resolved.

In the Sprint qualifications, national team members Monique Sullivan (Team PCL) and Joe Velcoe (Team Ontario) posted the fastest times with Veloce the first, and only athlete, to go over the 70km/h barrier.

In the quarterfinals of women’s match Sprint, there were some close races between Krista Ruby (Team Ontario) and Kate O’Brien (Team PCL) – both won by O’Brien. The big upset of the day was defending women’s Sprint champ Candice Vermeulen (Team Ontario) being beaten in two straight by relatively unknown newcomer, Lizanne Wilmot (Team NCCH p/b DEC). Wilmot also went on to beat Sara Byers (Team Ontario), last year’s silver medalist, to take home the bronze. It turns out that Wilmot has been living in Australia for the last 10 years and took up the sport there.

The gold medal final came down to Sullivan and her teammate O’Brien with the title going to the former in two straight as O’Brien did her best to upset the veteran but in the end settled for the silver.

The men’s Sprint final pitted Hugo Barrette of Equipe de Quebec against Veloce as expected. Barrette took the first race in a close battle but Veloce returned the favour forcing a final third ride to decide the match sprint jersey. When the dust settle it was Barrette coming out on top after three very close sprints – one decided by a tire width.

Part of the Omnium, the Individual Pursuit is also a national championship race on its own, and Jasmin Glaesser (Cycling BC) took charge claiming the gold by four seconds over Ontario’s Annie Foreman McKay (The Cyclery-Opus) who set a fast early time that gave her the silver. Alberta’s Allison Beveridge (Trek Red Truck) raced for the bronze and leads the women’s Omnium after three events with 114 points over Glaesser’s 112 with Gilgen at 108 points.

The men’s 4,000m Individual Pursuit was a similar affair with roadie Ryan Roth (Silber Pro Racing) setting an early fast time that was eclipsed with a solid ride by Remi Pelletier-Roy (Equipe de Quebec) as he stamped his dominance in this event by winning gold again. Roth surprised many with his silver as this was his first time at Track Nationals. Real Deal’s Ed Veal finished off the podium with a stellar ride for the bronze and leads the men’s Omnium with 110 points to Pelletier Roy’s 104 with Jean-Michel Lachance (Quebec) in third at 96 points.

In the Master competitions legendary Steve Bauer won his first National title (since 1996) taking the gold in the Masters C Men’s 500m Time Trial – despite having never competed at this distance during his career.

Gord Singleton, of 1982 Keirin Worlds gold medal fame, claimed the bronze in the Masters C Men Sprint with Gerard-Louis Robert (Quebec) taking the gold and Richard Ulgade the silver.

Of special note we have observed some excellent sportsmanship between competitors during this event – something that perhaps we do not see enough of in sport. Kudos to Sullivan, O’Brien and Byers for leading by example.

Day 3 begins early on Monday morning with the 500/1000 TTs for the Elites – both an Omnium and championship event.  It will be interesting to see who’s legs recover best from Day two’s efforts.
