August 8, 2002 – (Tillsonburg, on) – The 2002 Tim Hortons Road NationalChampionships opened today in Oxford County, on. The individual time trials(ITT) were held today in Tillsonburg for all categories and under acloudless sky.
The morning session started with the Men and Women’s Master’s categoriesand Junior Men and Women. The afternoon kicked off with the Elite Women.Defending her 2001 National Time Trial title, and having just stepped offthe plane from the Commonwealth Games in Manchester sporting her ITTBronze medal, Lyne Bessette of Knowlton, QC, crossed the line in thirdplace. Genevieve Jeanson of Lachine, QC, who had to pull out of theCommonwealth Games due to injury, was back in top form, finishing first.British Columbia’s Leah Goldstein started off what looks to be a good 2002Road Nationals weekend with a second place finish.
The Elite Men ITT race included Canada’s top male riders, Eric Wohlberg ofLevack on, Mark Walters of Toronto on, Svein Tuft, of Surrey B.C. and AlexCloutier of Ste. Foy, Quebec. In true Wohlberg fashion, he pulled out yetanother powerhouse time trial ride, finishing first ahead of Alex Cloutierin second place and Svein Tuft in third . Wohlberg has won multiple timetrial National titles in his 11 years on the National Team.
Friday and Saturday, the event moves to Harrington, on for the Road Racesand Sunday the event wraps up with the Criterium in downtown Woodstock.Also on Sunday is the TimBit challenge, where children get to participatein their own event and ride with members of the national team.
