April 2, 2003 – Gord Fraser continued a streak of impressive results by snagging the super fast stage one in a tight sprint over Ben Brooks (Jelly Belly) and Chris Horner (Saturn). Canada's Jacob Erker (Schroeder Iron) finished in the heat of things taking 7th, and Polish Canadian (LeMond Fitness/Cra-Z Soap) Peter Mazur took 10th. Earlier in the stage a group containinig David Clinger (Prime Alliance), Jelly-Belly's Mariano Fredrieck, HealthNet's Mike Sayers, and Frank Maples (Green Mountain Sports) were away until the yellow train of Saturn riders reeled in the foursome, setting up the stage for a bunch sprint.

In the women's race, Ina Teutenberg (Saturn) outsprinted Dede Barry (T-Mobile) in a two-woman breakaway that finished half a minute ahead of the charging pack. Genevieve Jeason (Rona/Esker) retained her lead with Barry's teammate Kim Bruckner only twenty seconds behind. Look for some tough racing between the strong women's team triumverate Saturn, T-Mobile and Rona, in the days ahead.
