June 27, 2002 (Fitchburg, MA) – Canadian Lyne Bessette, of the Quebec
Selection, won the first stage and took the lead of the four-stage
Fitchburg Longsjo Classic today. The stage was an 11.3-km individual time
trial.
American Kimberly Bruckner, of the Saturn Timex Team, followed 42 seconds
behind, while Canadian Genevieve Jeanson, of Team RONA, came in third, 1
second behind Bruckner.
Commenting on what appears to be a disappointing performance by Jeanson,
RONA Team manager Andre Aubut said, “There is no point in speculating about
a reason for this. An athlete has some great days, and once in a while,
some not-so-great days. Genevieve is no different. The sun will set
tonight and rise tomorrow, and then we’ll see how we approach the rest of
the race.”
Tomorrow, the second stage is a circuit race through the streets of
Fitchburg. Thirteen laps of a 5-km loop, ending with a hundred-foot climb.
