Canada MTB Cup XC #6 Bromont Report, Full Results, Photos

July 5, 2009 (Bromont, QC) – Following rain during the week riders faced a muddy course but no rain on race day. In the Elite men’s competition Canada MTB Cup series leader Derek Zandstra (3 Rox Racing) established a nice gap on the field on the first lap but half way up the climb he flatted. When he missed the tech zone at the top of the hill he had to run the entire lap.

Raphael Gagne (QC) Equipe du Quebec/Maxxis Rocky Mountain took over the lead which he would never relinquish as a chase followed at one minute including Stefan Widmer (Can) Rocky Mountain Factory Team, Cameron Jette (ON) Trek Store Toronto, Matthew Hadley (BC) Xprezo, Julien Fillion (QC) Devinci and Léni Trudel (Specialized). A second chase group included Eric Batty (ON) Trek Store Toronto, team mate Peter Glassford (ON), and Andrew Watson (ON) Norco Factory Team.

Over the next few laps riders were dropping like flies – the tech zone was a bee hive of activity. Watson powered from 8th place to 2nd, finishing 1:03 behind Gagne while Hadley rode a strong pace to claim 3rd with Glassford coming in 4th despite a hard crash on the final lap.

In the Elite women’s race a pleasant surprise was late entry, Marie-Hélène Prémont (QC) Maxxis-Rocky Mountain, who took the lead right from the start. Half way up the climb Prémont had a 30-second gap on second placed Amanda Sin (ON) 3 Rox Racing . Going on the second lap Prémont had a very comfortable lead but ran into a serious derailleur mechanical problem. Sin was able to capitalize taking over the lead having a solid race finishing with a smile, and the top podium position.

“I kinda liked the crazy mud out there. I had fun… typical Bromont I guess,” said Ontario’s Sin after her win. Men’s winner Gagne commented, “Awesome race but a bit risky only a week before nationals. Overall I’m feeling good and happy with my race.”

Third placed Elite men’s finisher Hadley thought there was too much running on the course, “In the first 200m we were all already off running.” Meanwhile Zandstra had what he referred to as an ‘interesting day’. “I flatted a few minutes after the start and didn’t see the tech zone at the top of the climb so I ended up running an entire lap.” (Zandstra finished in 6th)

Kristina Laforge (QC) Team Quebec/Cyclone and Leandre Bouchard (QC) Equipe du Quebec took the Junior women’s and men’s races.

Emily Batty/Trek Store Toronto, Canada MTB Cup XC series women’s leader, did not compete and is in Bromont training for next weekend’s 2009 MTB XC Nationals in St. Felicien. While cheering on her team mates she helped us out with some coverage of the Bromont Canada MTB Cup.
